Abstract
Neutropenic enterocolitis is one of gastrointestinal complications which are often seen in association with leukemia and lymphoma. Lesions in the terminal ileum, cecum and ascending colon in may of these patients have been referred to as
necrotizing
enterocolitis, ileocecal sydrome, neutropenic enterocolitis and typhlitis. Most information concerning this entity is reported in small autopsy series or sporadic case reports. The cause of this entity appears to be multifactorial. However, its
increased recognition recently may be related to the advent of aggressive chemotherapeutic regimens for treating hematologic disease and an increased incidence of the condition. The clinical symptoms are nonspecific but mimic acute appendicitis.
There
is some controversy about the role of surgery in treating necrotizing enterocolitis. But early recognition and surgical intervention appear to favorably influence the eventual outcome of this disease. In this paper, we report one case and brief
review
of literature.
